Every year, brands wrap themselves with new trends and take the fashion world by storm. These fashion trends also change the face of everyday fashion. For e.g. there was a time when puffed sleeve tops, high neck tops, high waisted jeans, low waisted jeans were in demand. The drawback of trends is that they fade away after a year or so. Some even fade over a fortnight. But there are a few that never go out of style.
Dungarees are one of the evergreen fashion trends. They are comfortable, trendy, and casual and can be worn by any age group or gender. Let’s have a look at how dungarees came into existence.
Origin and History of Dungaree Fabric
The word Dungaree is believed to be from India. It is believed to have originated from the Marathi word ‘Dungri’ as the cloth used to be manufactured in a village called ‘Dongri’ located Mumbai in the 17th century. It was considered to be a cheap fabric made of thick cotton, colored in white or blue and was worn by farmers, manual laborers and slaves. Dungri was later exported to UK and people from UK started pronouncing the word ‘Dungri’ a little differently, that’s how it became ‘Dungaree’ and has been pronounced the same till date. Dungaree overalls were considered to be made from a strong fabric that is easy to carry and doesn’t come in the way while working in factories.
Difference between Denim and Dungaree Fabric
Dungaree fabrics are often confused with denim fabrics as they both are thick and kind of look the same from afar, but there is a lot of difference between the two. Dungaree fabric is thick pre-colored yarn and Denims are woven from uncolored yarn and colored after the weaving process is done.
Today, Dungarees are worn by any gender, age and considered to be an easy and comfortable form of clothing. Dungarees have transformed over the years and are now available in different patterns and styles. It can be suited for any casual occasion, can be paired with tops, inners, scarfs and looks trendy on everybody.
